The European Day of Languages is commemorated yearly on the 26th of November. It celebrates the variety of languages within Europe, and the importance of languages in helping us understand each other better.
This year, our school marked this event in two ways. In the first, ten simple phrases were displayed in each of the languages taught at our school: Maltese, English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Arabic. These phrases were printed on long narrow strips and attached to the various staircases in Blocks A and C.
Ms S. Apap and Ms D. Dimech, heads of department of Maltese and German respectively, penned a skit for a special assembly. The sketch highlighted the importance of knowing more than one language to better communicate in a multi-ethnic society.
Man is a social animal, and we communicate through languages. We hope that such activities can get our students to realise the importance of languages in a globalised world.
