Site Visit to Plant Health Directorate

On Friday 2nd December, a group of seventeen Biology students accompanied by three teachers, visited the Plant Health Directorate in Lija as part of their coursework for MATSEC. The four hour visit proved to be very interesting and engaging for the students.

Ms. Marisa Debono who delivered the talk proved to be very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. The students learnt about the endemic and indigenous plants of Malta as well as the pests that threaten them. They also learnt about the pros and cons of in vitro propagation when compared to traditional methods and the laboratory procedures involved in achieving the end result. All this they consolidated through word searches, quizzes, treasure hunts and even hands on experience at plant cleaning, division and transfer.
