Students from our school are being offered the opportunity to learn about respect while practising judo with an IJF qualified instructor. Mr Castillo, the instructor, comes to our school on alternate Fridays. The programme runs for three weeks. Topics covered up to now include the importance of judo etiquette, some Japanese terminology, the layout of the dōjo (i.e. the martial arts training hall), and how this integrates with the idea of respect. On a more technical level, techniques which are being covered include ukemis (break falls) and some basic throws.
The instructor told us that while not everyone could perform a simple roll, he appreciated the fact that all the students tried their utmost, meaning that they are very willing to improve.
